Happy New Year! In the January issue we check in with Omni Brewing on their opening (cheers!), share a Maple Grove resident's stories from WWII and work on wellness with healthy lifestyle advocate Brooke Van Asch.

For Chris Spah, daily work turned into a hobby. As a graphic designer, he is always using photos for the websites he creates. “I always need more photos than what is given to me, so I started [photography] in my free time and it turned into another type of art,” Spah says.

Sitting down for a conversation with WWII decorated war veteran Joe Kovar quickly becomes a lesson in world history. Kovar, a 1943 graduate of Anoka High School, joined the Army shortly after graduation and traveled to Georgia to receive infantry basic training.

 

Plenty of high schoolers plan on being a doctor someday, but not many of are ready to be one out of high school. For the students of the Osseo High School health science program, that’s not the case.

 

Anna Shmidov describes her life as a dream come true. She came to Maple Grove from Russia in 1980 as a political refugee, along with her husband and two children, and brought a vast musical knowledge with her.

When Piperi Lisle first friended fitness instructor Brooke Van Asch on Facebook in July, at the behest of her good friend who was receiving nutrition instruction from Van Asch, she couldn’t know that the online relationship would lead to a 15- lb.

 

Food scientist and owner of Exotic Palates, Anu Seshadri is a culinary instructor in the greater Twin Cities area. She also teaches cooking courses through Osseo Area Community Education, so anyone can learn the subtleties of Asian cooking.

 

As a finalist for Allstate’s Ray Lynch Community Service Award, Greg Sniezek received a $2,000 grant that he donated to CROSS, a local nonprofit, to further its efforts in providing for those in need.

 

Brooke Hawley Edwards has worked for Pearle Vision since high school and throughout college when she served as a receptionist.

 

This year, two local students have been named National Merit semifinalists, placing in the top one percent of all students taking the 2014 PSAT college readiness test. Evan Skaja is a National Honor Society and Link Crew member in his senior year at Maple Grove High School.

 

Since being featured in our May 2014 issue, interior design non-profit Designing Dreams has been incorporated in four states.

 

Spark Music Studio uses new technology and genre variety in its music lessons. Employing classical, jazz, rock and pop, owner Nick Tucker teaches students ranging in age from 3 to 65.
